Reciting Qur'an for a Dead person?

Fatwah of Schloars

  • It is not permissible to recite the Qur'an for the dead. The preponderant opinion is that it is neither Mustahab (desirable) nor permissible. One should rather recite Qur'an, seeking the reward for himself, & supplicate Allah عز وجل for his relatives & others.

There is no evidence that reciting the Quran & intending the reward for doing so to be given to someone else. One should not recite Qur'an on behalf of another, dedicating the reward to him.

  • Reciting the Qur'an with the intention of dedicating the reward to the deceased person is bid' ah (religious innovation), because there is no evidence to support that act. Furthermore, a Hadith has been reported concerning the recitation of Surah Ya-Sin upon the dying person, but it is a da' if (weak) Hadith that does not stand as proof. Therefore, it is impermissible to continue doing this bid' ah.

  • There is NO PROOF for reciting Quran and seeking its reward for the dead.

  • The action of reciting Qur'an over the dead at his grave or after his death before his burial or reading for him in any place so that the reward can be gifted to him has no foundation, it was neither done by the prophet or his companions,

As for charity for the deceased and supplicating for them, then that benefits and reaches them
